Groen Receives 2020 National ICF Construction Award -1st Place Light Commercial in Las Vegas, NV

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

Groen Construction was announced as the winner of the Light Commercial at the 2020 National ICF Builder Awards in Las Vegas, NV, at an evening award presentation held in conjunction with the World of Concrete trade show in February 2020.  The annual project-of-the-year competition is widely regarded as the biggest event in the ICF industry, and the best opportunity to come together, network,  and celebrate the advances that have been made.

Industry growth, combined with a flood of entries this year, led to the expansion of several categories.  In addition to the three residential categories, winners were chosen in the light commercial, specialty application and multifamily divisions. This year’s event also included a residential development category, and the heavy commercial winners were separated into education and religious divisions. The top scoring projects stood out in a worldwide competition where every entry was noteworthy and impressive.

The construction teams who built the winning projects were recognized in front of more than 200 of the most influential figures in the ICF industry, including designers, installers, manufacturers, distributors, owners, and representatives of auxiliary ICF products. Complexity, creativity, site challenges and media exposure were all factored in determining which projects deserved top honors.

“These are milestone projects that have advanced the entire industry due to their significance and visibility,” says Clark Ricks, editorial director of this magazine and one of the contest judges. “The individuals who design and build these impressive structures are redefining what’s possible with ICF.”

ICF construction lends towards a tight-building envelope and an energy-efficient public safety building. Essential components of an energy-efficient building are continuous insulation (CI), a high-performing air- and moisture barrier, and high thermal mass products. CI and an air- and moisture barrier stops thermal bridging, increases the effective R-value and prevents condensation. High thermal mass products absorb and store heat energy and stabilize temperature shifts within the structure by slowing down heat transfer.

ICF constructions provides all these features and are a superb wall system for building an energy-efficient public safety building. In addition to energy savings and quiet comfort, another reason to build with insulated concrete forms is resistance to fire. Most ICF walls have a 4-hour fire rating as opposed to 15 minutes for a comparable wood framed wall.
